A resume is a structured snapshot of your experience, achievements, and skills. Think bullet points, metrics, and job titles.

A biography is your narrative -  a short-form story of who you are, what you’ve built, and why it matters. It’s what people read before they meet you in the boardroom, podcast booth, or investor deck.




Use your resume when:
  • You’re applying for a job
  • A recruiter asks for your materials
  • You’re in a formal hiring or internal mobility process
  • You need to show your track record clearly i.e. roles, results, credentials

Use your executive biography when:
  • You want to add depth to a job application and share more than bullet points
  • You’re being introduced to a board, investor, or leadership team
  • You’re speaking at an event or joining a panel
  • You’re building your leadership presence outside of job titles i.e. in the media, in your industry, or online

Because by this point in your career, you’ve done meaningful work and that deserves a story.

Only when it adds value.

In today’s market, cover letters aren’t always required, but they’re still useful in a few key scenarios:

  • When the job posting specifically asks for one
  • When you're applying cold and need to explain why you're reaching out
  • When your story isn’t obvious from your resume (career pivot, relocation, gap, etc.)

If you're applying through a warm introduction or being considered for a board or executive role, you’ll often use a short, tailored message or email instead.

A strong cover letter doesn’t repeat your resume but it connects the dots:
  • Why this role
  • Why this company
  • Why now

Think of it less as a formality and more as an opportunity, used selectively, but strategically.
