How to ask for (and receive) LinkedIn recommendations

Your LinkedIn recommendations matter. They validate your experience and confirm what you say about yourself in your profile.

Not only are they important to the reader (potential employers, business partners etc.), the content of those recommendations become a searchable text – connecting you to people who need what you have.

What are LinkedIn recommendations?

Written by other members, recommendations are the best way to market your company, validate your experience and invite advocacy.

Why are they important?

LinkedIn recommendations are seen as a high-quality trust signal to both LinkedIn and to your profile viewers. As mentioned, LinkedIn recommendations also boost your profile’s SEO and give the thumbs up to other members that you know what you’re talking about.

How many should I have?

Aim for at least five recommendations, then build up from there. You can’t have too many LinkedIn recommendations. LinkedIn will display the two most recent recommendations received (see below). Aim to get at least two recommendations for each of the positions you’ve held for the last 10 years.

How to ask for a LinkedIn recommendation

Create your own recommendation template, versus the automatically generated one. It’s far more personable and you’ll have better luck. Here are two templates to get you started.

Short version

Hi [insert name here].

I hope all is well.

I am reaching out to ask if you would be willing to write a recommendation on my behalf to assist in my upcoming job search.

It was a pleasure working with you [insert how you know this person], and I think that you would be able to speak to my professional abilities and strengths as I am looking to further my career.

I greatly appreciate your time and I look forward to keeping in touch.

Kind regards
